This year will be an exciting year in the Human Cities III_Challenging The City Scale project! While this iteration of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union project is coming to an end in 2018, it also means that a showcase of all the experiments and subsequent learnings will be published in an insightful and reflective and book. Clear Village, in partnership with project leader Cité du Design Saint Etienne, will act as editor-in-chief and oversee this key part of the multi-year Human Cities III journey.
We are keen to shape the Human Cities III storytelling and share the incredible work that has been achieved through this project and its unique partnerships. For all of 2017 and some of 2016, Clear Village has traveled to partner cities all over Europe to exchange ideas and see first hand how each urban experiment has come together. We attended the 10th Biennale Internationale Design in Saint Etienne, France, visited Bratovševa ploščad, a soviet style residential block in Ljubljana, Slovenia, learned about School As A Service from our Helsinki colleagues, and saw the street intervention ¡Haciendo la Calle! by our partners in Bilbao, Spain.
…And those are just some of the projects to be focused on in the final publication.
Clear Village’s experiment The Maker Mile is also set to be included. The Maker Mile comprises one square mile north-east of the City of London. This experiment brings together old and new maker industries under a strong brand, putting the area on the economic map of London. This mix of old and new maker-industries (that include print-making, digital fabrication labs, and art studios), brings these maker industries together to inspire interaction + collaboration. The Maker Mile establishes an important economic case for the industries amongst the area’s rising threat of gentrification.
The upcoming Human Cities III publication, due out in September 2018, will breakdown each experiment and highlight its outcomes and our learnings. We’re looking forward to a comprehensive and influential publication regarding participatory design, urban spaces, and our shared EU values. Our Human Cities III journey has been enormously rewarding, and we trust passionate urban designers will appreciate the hard work and innovation undertaken over the last 4 years.
