After a freezing weekend, Monday came around quicker than usual and the realisation of organising a Jumble Sale set in. The big question looming over us all was would anyone attend? Would it be jumbled with enough clobber? And what if anything had been forgotten?
The ingredients for the jumble sale began to accumulate. The space to host it…check! The generous donations from local residents…check! (Including a suitcase bursting at the seams with beautiful garments from a delightful French lady). Oh and not forgetting the tea, coffee and other refreshments…check! Finally, there were the “usual suspects”, as they like to be known at the Monday meetups, and a couple of new faces too.
Small Works had completely transformed itself and was looking like something out of a swap shop. The space was filled with retro coats, a suitcase spilling out with a range of petite French clothes, and a bookcase boasting a quirky collection of reading material. The Sale wasn’t quite as popular as we’d hoped, but the atmosphere remained upbeat and the chatter constant.
The general consensus for next Monday was on a competitive favourite, Bingo. Now to learn the jargon! “Thirty two buckle my shoe” or our favourite “a knock on the door that’s number four”. This is our favourite piece of Bingo jargon as it represents the number of people who politely helped us reschedule the summer Jumble Sale in the public outdoor space.
The “fantastic four” as they are now known have shown loyal support in this sharing community we are working towards. In the spirit of back page newspaper ads, Small Works hopes to support a sustainable network for residents to advertise to one another. So, if you fancy putting up a shelf and need to borrow a drill, or perhaps consider yourself to be a DIY enthusiast with time to offer, let us know!
