The Fix Our City exhibition, as a part of London Design Festival, is a week long exploration of “new approaches towards the roles of citizens and maker spaces in the transformation of city life.” The goal of the event is to examine through workshops and demonstrations real-life approaches to sustainable design, circular economies and open design methods. We want to see cities support and renew themselves!
Our Walled Garden team put together a vertical garden and highlighted the DIY Thirsty Plant Kit from Technology Will Save Us. The vertical garden tackles concerns with the current food supply chain. The vast majority of the food we eat in London, like many other cities, is imported from abroad. This contributes to pollution, unequal distribution and wastage. Our food supply chain demands a serious rethink to improve sustainability – not just in London but around the world.
Bringing food production into cities is one solution to this broken food supply chain problem.
When cities are crowded and space is at a premium vertical gardens can be made cheaply and without a lot of space. They also provide neighbourhoods with innovative new green spaces.
With simple recycled materials such as scrap wood, empty milk bottles, drainage pipes, a pump and a few tubes, it’s easy to build a garden-wall of any size.
The milk bottles were sourced from local coffee shops, Hackney Bureau and The Hive of Vyner Street. It’s possible to see how easy it can be to grow your own salads, herbs and even onions nearly anywhere – just with a little creativity and know-how.
