MAKE:SHIFT Craft & Sustainability

Last November, Machines Room took part in the Craft Council’s excellent biennial conference, Make:Shift, at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester. It was attended by over 250 people and presented the work of 55 leading specialists, practitioners and experts from the fields of craft, design, science, engineering, technology, medicine and manufacturing.

Videos of the speakers have just been released, allowing us to catch up on sessions we missed, and to share them with you. I was representing Machines Room on the Sustainability panel, which was hosted by one of my longtime heroines, Lucy Siegle, who set the scene with a very convincing reminder about why the subject is so important. The other participants were Kathryn Fleming from Adidas, talking about their project making shoes from ocean plastic, and Maurizio Montalti from Officina Corpuscoli talking about products made from mycelium fungus.

It was a fascinating conversation, and very inspiring. We are experimenting with recycling plastic here at Machines Room, but have a long way to go before our processes are as slick as those of Adidas. Many thanks to the Crafts Council for an inspiring and uplifting couple of days.
