This summer on Regent Estate

Lots of new activities have started or are planned this summer at Small Works Hackney!

This month, Rich Hearn, founder of GenerationHackney, joined Small Works Hackney and set up free workshops for residents seeking employment. By partnering up with local businesses to offer at-risk teenagers work experience, the organisation aims to tackle the issue of youth re-offending in the neighbourhood. A potential apprentice will normally attend a consultation to review his skills, interests and motivations before attending a two-day course on work place behaviour.

Workshop 44 also hosted its first pop-up cinema event, with many more to come. Members screened Jamaican crime drama ‘The Harder They Come’, and hope to plan many more nights over the summer in collaboration with the local community. Films will be chosen and hosted by residents of Regent’s Estate with support from members of Workshop 44.

Workshop 44 members Otesha are hosting their ‘Branch Out’ spring and summer program, which trains up unemployed 16-25 year olds from East London and supports them into a green job in the horticultural sector and beyond. Participants gain City & Guilds-accredited Level 1 Award in Practical Horticulture Skills at St Mary’s Secret Garden, as well as support finding paid employment at the end of the program. The spring session will run from April 22nd until July 1st, when the summer session begins. For more information, visit their webpage, or email Anna at anna@otesha.org.uk.

Finally, the Regent’s Estate football club will have its first kick-off in May at a nearby football pitch on the Estate. Headed by a local football trainer, the club is already enjoying a high level of interest as the weather heats up. The club will run on Thursday evenings, and is open to all.
