For the London Design Festival in September Clear Village exhibited the results of the CIRCuIT Urban Mined hackathon with Good Waste and Other Today alongside other designers from Hackney Depot.
The exhibition showcased material samples made from demolition waste – fused glass architectural forms and reprocessed marble like plaster alongside the tools and machines used to manipulate the material.
On Monday night we participated in a panel discussion on circular design and materials with Batch Works and Other Today; we talked about the importance of systemic design and considering the full life cycles of products beyond their first use.
On Tuesday we hosted Circular Crafting with waste Glass and Plaster, a workshop with members of the public to share the techniques we learned such as decalcifying plaster board and mixing the gypsum with pigments derived from brick dust and charcoal to create ‘Scagliolia’ tiles.
The exhibition that served as a springboard for further conversations with architects, designers and industry professionals to discuss the opportunities and challenges of scaling these techniques.
